The myth of the perfect itinerary

Modern travel planning has become a branch of linear programming. Armed with Notion templates, Google Maps pin layers, and algorithmic recommendation feeds, travellers attempt to engineer the "optimal" trip: every museum ticket booked in a 10:30am timeslot, every dinner reservation locked two months in advance, every hour accounted for.

In practice, over-optimization kills the very mechanism that makes travel transformative: cognitive surprise. When every hour is pre-committed, variance becomes an enemy rather than an invitation.

The cost of zero temporal slack

In queuing theory, a system operating at 100% capacity experiences infinite queue delays the moment minor random variance occurs. A holiday scheduled to maximum capacity operates on identical dynamics:

The most memorable travel experiences are almost never the ones you booked six weeks before leaving home. They are the unexpected detours that happened because your afternoon had nothing in it.

The 50% commitment rule

For any multi-week journey, our operating rule is strict: commit to only 50% of the daily schedule.

Book the critical bottleneck in advance—the high mountain refuge on the Tour du Mont Blanc, or the long-distance overnight sleeper train. Leave the mornings, the afternoons, and every second evening completely unscripted.

Cultivating environmental responsiveness

Leaving empty margin creates the cognitive space to respond to immediate reality:

  1. If it rains relentlessly in Kanazawa, you spend four unhurried hours in an old wooden kissaten reading a book and listening to jazz.
  2. If a mountain trail in Slovenia is shrouded in thick fog, you descend to the valley and follow the emerald river instead.
  3. If you discover a family-run trattoria in Bergamo with three tables and handwritten menus, you return for dinner three nights in a row.

Travel is not an efficiency metric to be maximized; it is an exercise in intentional attention.
